www.QV500.com - Alfa Romeo SZ Part 3: SZ Trophy

Although 1991 was the final year of SZ production, come 1993, quite a few cars remained un-sold back at the factory. Clearly it wasn't worth any kind of major investment to clear the backlog of stock, but a racing variant would give some impetus to faltering sales. Together, Alfa Romeo and Zagato organised the SZ Trophy for 1993. The championship comprised a mixture of races, one event supporting the Monaco Grand Prix and strictly for SZ's whilst the remaining seven rounds were run as part of the burgeoning Italian GT Championship. Sometimes a class was organised within the Italian events specifically for the SZ, at other times they ran against limited opposition from Porsche 944's and Mazda RX-7's.

To keep costs down, the concept was to race without making any major modifications, these being perceived as only distorting the technical merits of the original car. For an inclusive sum of 146m Lire (compared 80m for a standard car), customers were provided with a brand new SZ equipped with special Tuning and Safety upgrade packs. The Tuning Kit comprised special shock absorbers, springs and a competition braking system, re-mapped engine management, a racing exhaust and reinforced clutch. As a result, output was probably closer to 250bhp and possibly beyond. The Safety Kit included a roll-cage, four-point racing harness, a fire extinguisher system and tow hook. Additionally, each SZ Trophy car was sold with 12 five-spoke OZ Racing wheels, enough tyres for all eight races and a mechanic at each event too.
