Group A regulations dictated that 5000 identical cars had to be produced for the FIA to grant homologation, a figure BMW managed to surpass within four months of beginning M3 production in September 1986. However, once this initial batch of cars were completed, Group A permitted manufacturers to further enhance specifications (crucial for retaining a competitive advantage) so long as a further 500 examples of the uprated version were sold to the public. As a result, the first M3 Evolution was put into production during February 1987. |
