Group A regulations dictated that 5000 identical cars had to be produced for the FIA to grant homologation, a figure BMW managed to surpass within four months of beginning M3 production in September 1986. However, once this initial batch of cars were completed, Group A permitted manufacturers to further enhance specifications (crucial for retaining a competitive advantage) so long as a further 500 examples of the uprated version were sold to the public. As a result, the first M3 Evolution was put into production during February 1987.

M3 Evo I's as they would become known featured a handful of subtle aero revisions including an extended front spoiler, lipped rear deck wing and lightweight boot lid. The regular M3’s auxillary driving lights (normally housed in the front bumper) were deleted, replaced with air ducts to feed the front brakes. 505 were completed between February and May of 1987.
