October 1954 saw Ferrari debut their second series 250 Europa at the Paris Salon. Designated the Europa GT, this heavily revised model was an almost totally new machine despite the obvious visual similarities to its predecessor. With a new short wheelbase chassis designated Tipo 508, this traditional tubular steel ladder-type frame featured a 2600mm wheelbase, 200mm shorter than before. This sizeable reduction had been facilitated by a switch from Lampredi's long block motor to the Colombo V12 with it's smaller dimensions. |
More compact and powerful, the Colombo unit (designated Tipo 112) was little more than a subtly de-tuned version of the motor seen in 250 Mille Miglia sports racing cars. Displacement was 2953cc thanks to a bore and stroke of 58.8mm x 73mm, but most importantly, output was markedly improved over the Lampredi unit with 220bhp on tap at 6500rpm. Compression was set at 9.0:1 and three twin choke Weber 36 DCZ carburettors fitted, the same 342 America-sourced four-speed gearbox remaining. This was Ferrari's first street car built with independent front suspension, however, although appearing on the first example (chassis 0357), it was only 0387 and the 15 subsequent cars that came equipped as such. Nevertheless, top speed was nearly 140mph while 0-60mph required little more than seven seconds. As before, Ferrari wanted this car to be built to a more standardised specification, particularly with regard to the appearance and the stock bodywork consequently remained very similar to the long wheelbase model. Customers requests for special detail alterations were still obliged though, one particularly well regarded client, Roman Ferrario, purchasing a pair of GT's with bespoke alterations. |

His first car, chassis 0379, featured a re-profiled nose and new headlights while his second (0407) was also fitted with new lights, a smaller oval grille and a totally redesigned interior. Of the 27 GT Europa's constructed by Pinin Farina as Coupe's, 24 were fabricated predominantly from steel while the remaining three (0357, 0387 and 0389) received lightweight aluminium bodies. Just one of the 24 steel-bodied 250 GT Europa's was originally completed in right-hand drive. |
| Three cars were fitted with early versions of the Tipo 128 engine, 0405, 0407 and 0409 all featuring these new motors with their stronger crankshafts and main points. Only one GT Europa (chassis 0359) was built without a Pinin Farina design, this vehicle having been specially commissioned by Princess Liliane de Rethy of Belgium. Quite simply one of the finest examples of fifties Italian coachbuilding, 0359 was a stunning one off design with perfect balance and utmost elegance in every detail. Production of the standard car was discontinued in spring 1956 to be replaced by the new 250 GT Pinin Farina, this model becoming more widely known as the Boano-series. After a mere 18 months in production, 28 second series Europa's had been constructed by Ferrari, the chassis numbers and original configurations of which are indexed below. Finally, a number of GT Europa's were prepared for competition use with 250 Mille Miglia straight port cylinder heads (some even got fully independent rear suspension) and although never conceptualised as a race car, they did surprisingly well. Indeed, during the autumn of 1956, Oliver Gendebien and navigator Michel Ringoir finished the gruelling Tour de France in a fine third overall with chassis 0357 GT, an aluminium-bodied Pinin Farina Coupe. |

The next major outing came for chassis 0373 GT, another Pinin Farina Coupe, in the Liege-Rome-Liege road race, this car featuring distinctive wire mesh headlight guards that it still wears to this day. Driven again by Gendebien but this time with Stasse in accompaniment, the Ecurie Francorchamps entered machine came in a very creditable third. Finally, that December of 1956, Alfonso de Portago contested the Nassau Speed Week GT race and took victory in chassis 0415, a special Pinin Farina Berlinetta, in what was a fitting end to the final year of Europa production. |
