As with almost every Ferrari of the fifties and sixties, wealthy customers were able to specify all manner of bespoke alterations to their PF Coupe's. Available at considerable extra cost, custom modifications took the form of anything from a re-configured instrument binnacle or electrically operated windows to entirely re-designed bodywork and interiors. More extensively tailored examples are referred to as Coupe Speciale's, the first having been built on chassis 0853 GT, the fourth PF Coupe made. Commissioned by Prince Bertil of Sweden, 0853 was little more than a subtly reworked version of the first three Notchback prototypes. |
Its awkward detailing around the nose, cabin and rear wings would suggest it may well have been one of the factory development cars - something that probably wouldn't have gone down too well with the Prince. The second Speciale, chassis 1007 GT, received a re-designed interior at the request of well-known North American Ferrari enthusiast, William Bryant. But the third, chassis 1187 GT, was the most significant departure yet, a truly bespoke machine. Constructed for the 1959 Geneva Salon, 1187 GT received a body designed in much the same style as 0725 GT, an earlier, Ellena-period 250 GT Coupe Speciale built for Prince Bernhard of Holland. 1187 GT, however, featured subtly different detailing, most notably around the sail panels and tail. Although there are undoubtedly a handful of additional PF Coupe's that can rightly warrant a Speciale title, the final example we shall cover here is chassis 1751 GT. It was fabricated with a beautiful new covered headlight nose profile and also sported lourved engine cooling vent's carved from behind each front wheelarch. 1751 GT must be one of the most aesthetically pleasing Pinin Farina designs from this entire series. Other significant machines were those three aforementioned prototypes developed between late 1957 and early 1958, around four Speciale's (as many as six or seven could exist) while at least four period re-bodies were carried out on Notchback chassiss. |

The chassis numbers and various configurations of all the known Speciale are listed below while currently under research are 1265 GT, 1315 GT and 1373 GT. Finally, with regard to the handful of examples that were re-bodied in period by the likes of Drogo and Nembo (Neri & Bonacini), these vehicles have desirability on a par with almost all of the Pinin Farina-bodied Speciale's. With exotic styling often imitating endurance racing cars of the period, these were bespoke machines built at vast cost. It is possible that one or two further examples could have received such re-configuration work, any further information would be gratefully received. |
