Scaglietti Berlinetta chassis 0925 GT

Ferrari's Series IV Tour de France Berlinetta's were visually almost unchanged from the 15 Scaglietti-bodied '3-louvre' cars built between April 1957 and March '58. In total, 29 Series IV's were completed between February 1958 and March 1959, all receiving Scaglietti's covered headlight bodywork. Minor differences included more upright tail light clusters and a new single louvre sail panel. All but the very earliest cars received bonnets minus pre-creasing for the air induction scoop, some getting a bare aluminium strip running between the wheelbase. A handful of Series IV's were reputedly finished with cut-down windscreens and lower rooflines, but information on these cars is scarce.

Set-up wise, although initially still using the Tipo 508 C / 128 C chassis / engine combination, from chassis numbers 0969 GT and 1039 GT respectively, the 508 D chassis and 128 D engines were introduced. As you would expect, no radical alterations were made to these revised components, the new ‘D’ suffix’ denoting improvements in tube location for additional rigidity. Meanwhile, there were lighter con rods, crankshafts and pistons for the engine. Compression was once again varied from car to car, as were the carburettors, this resulting in some examples producing 240bhp whilst others were capable of an output in excess of 260bhp. The chassis numbers of all 29 cars are indexed below.
