Although Ferrari built some accomplished roadsters during the mid sixties, there hadn't been an open top version of their flagship Berlinetta since the 250 California. Acutely aware of this, Luigi Chinetti convinced Ferrari to build him a batch of stunning 275 GTS/4's that could potentially be equipped for competition and raced in the GT classes. However, only one of the ten GTS/4's ever made it to the track. Completed with a lightweight alloy body, chassis 09437 was entered for Chinetti under the psuedonym of NVRT (North Vermont Racing Team) and contested the 1967 Sebring 12 Hours. |
Having been announced back in February 1966, sales had been disappointing, Chinetti obviously seeing a high profile entry in one of the blue ribband endurance events as an ideal way to raise the GTS/4's profile. Driven by the all-girl team of Denise McCluggage and Marianne 'Pinkie' Rollo, his totally stock CITGO-backed 275 ended the race as the only Ferrari finisher. Placing 17th overall, this was good enough for second in the GT5.0 class but didn't result in GTS/4's flying out of Chinetti's downtown New York showroom. Having planned to sell at least 25, only ten were made, all in left-hand drive. They used an identical Tipo 596 chassis to the four-cam Berlinetta's, albeit with some supplementary bracing to maximise rigidity. Engines went unchanged with the 300bhp, 3.3-litre, Tipo 226 four-camshaft V12's from the GTB/4 being dropped straight in without any modifications. As you would expect, it was Pininfarina's sultry new bodywork that provided these cars with their unique appeal, Scaglietti fabricating the gorgeous new drop top shells, this seemingly straightforward transformation producing one of the sixties most beautiful cars. Interiors were unchanged with fine Connolly hides and carpet, an open gate gearshift and bucket seats. The chassis numbers and colour combinations of all ten GTS/4's are listed below. 275 GTS/4 NART Chassis Index |
