www.QV500.com - Ferrari 360 Part 2: 360 Spider

Unlike every other two-seat junior supercar from Ferrari, the firm decided that their stunning 360 would only be produced in Berlinetta and Spider configurations. Since 1972 and the introduction of the gorgeous Dino 246 GTS, right up until the last F355 GTS of 1998, production of a targa-topped baby Ferrari had always run alongside a Berlinetta. However, thanks to the well progressed development of a full 360 Spider, a targa variant was deemed unnecessary. Just twelve months after debuting the Modena, a Spider was unveiled, once again at the Geneva Salon, this time during March of 2000.

Curiously, Ferrari decided to drop the Modena tag, the 360 Spider's prominently featuring swept sail panels to increase rigidity. These house the technology required for a fully retractable electric hood that takes under 30 seconds to be raised or lowered. They also contain the seatbelt harnesses and mini roll hoops and form part of a full width panel that electro-hydraulically opens to hide all evidence of the hood when lowered. A glass engine cover is retained but now lies flush along the rear deck whilst mechanically, the Spider is unchanged although it does have a marginally lower (by 3mph) top speed. A similar range of options are available, the most desirable of which are sports seats, the Fiorano handling pack and Challenge grille's. Through the Scaglietti personalisation programme, clients can also request unique colour combinations with customised trimmings and paintwork.
