www.QV500.com - Ferrari 400 Superamerica Part 4: Series II (LWB)

From January 1962, Ferrari began offering a revised 400 Superamerica that incorporated a longer wheelbase chassis. Stretched from 2420 to 2600mm, the long wheelbase frame got the nod for its better high speed stability, after all, the Superamerica was capable of topping 170mph! No major changes were made to the 4-litre Colombo V12, displacement and output remaining unchanged at 3967cc and 340bhp respectively. Of the 22 cars built, four were completed as Cabriolet's while 18 were Coupe Aerodinamico's.

Like those 1961 and '62 short wheelbase Coupe Aerodinamico's that had been built to a more standardised specification than 1960 versions, these long wheelbase cars gradually phased in from early 1962 were a step closer again with regard to their interior and exterior detailing. All 18 Coupe Aerodinamico's originally got faired in headlights and a smooth engine blister to cover the carburettors (this had been a stylised duct on Series I cars), the interior too receiving a few changes. Thanks to the stretched wheelbase cabin space was improved, most notably in the back where two makeshift seats were fitted. Introduced at the London Motor Show during September 1962 (chassis 3931 SA), the long wheelbase Series II 400 Superamerica's remained in production until January 1964, by which time 22 had been completed. Four Cabriolet's and 18 Coupe Aerodinamico's were made, the chassis numbers, original configurations and associated historical highlights of which can be found in Part 5.
