410 SA Series III PF Coupe chassis 1305 SA
The Series III 410 Superamerica's brought with them considerably more power on debuting at 1958's Turin Salon. Featuing hot motors with 400bhp at 6500rpm, these additional horses came thanks to redesigned heads and the spark plugs being relocated to outside of the V. Commonly referred to as outside plug engines for obvious reasons, the compression ratio was raised to 9.0:1 and three huge Weber 46 DCF downdraught carbs fitted. This highly modified five-litre unit designated Tipo 126/58 became the most potent Lampredi powerplant ever fitted to a Ferrari street car. Just 12 Series III's were built between the summer's of 1958 and '59.

Chassis 1015 SA was the first to be completed and Ferrari displayed it during autumn of 1958 at the Turin Salon. Finished with a glassy cabin, one of three cockpit variations afforded to customers by Pininfarina (who bodied all 12 cars), 1015 also featured elegant covered headlights. Seven of the 12 Series III 410's were completed with similar nose configurations, the remaining five all being built with traditional open headlights. As with the Series II 410's, all Series III's used the Tipo 514 chassis with its short 2600mm wheelbase. Production ended in November 1959 and there was to be no Series IV, a new Colombo-powered 400 Superamerica replacing these grand old machines. It was the end of an era.
