www.QV500.com - Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer Part 3: 512i BB

The final Boxer, the 512i, most notably marked the arrival of fuel injection on Ferrari's Flat-12. Replacing the familiar Weber carbs, examples of which had been fitted to almost every previous Ferrari, the switch to fuel injection was taking place throughout the range, often to the dismay of enthusiasts who saw outputs dropping as a result. However, fuel injection not only improved an engine's flexibility but made it much easier to maintain. Retaining an identical 4942cc displacement and 9.2:1 compression, the 512i received a Bosch K-Jetronic injection system, this motor actually providing the full 340bhp of Weber carbed 512's and at 800rpm less (6000rpm).

A few minor detail changes were made to the bodywork with clear reflectors inserted into the front bumper and supplementary driving lights now exposed in the grille. There were also new wing mirrors. Launched during October 1981's Paris Salon, Ferrari's 512i BB remained in production for almost three years, its replacement, the Testarossa, being shown during September 1984 at Modena and then in Paris the next month. During these three years, 1007 fuel injected Boxer's were completed of which 43 were right-hand drive. This took entire BB production to just over 2300.
