![]() Chassis 15667, 1972 Le Mans 24 Hours |
By the time Ferrari's Daytona was granted homologation into Group 4 during January of 1972, a second batch of five GTB/4C's was already under construction at the Servizio Assistenza Clienti in Modena. Taking advantage of rulings that permitted much greater output, albeit at the cost of increased weight, in addition to Ferrari's newly built examples, all four of the five Series I GTB/4C's that had initially been raced in Group 5 trim were subsequently rebuilt to this new spec. A number of key differences helped identify these second series Competizione's from Ferrari's earlier version that had itself only debuted the previous autumn. |
| Set-up changes came in the form of a quicker steering rack and lighter Campagnolo cast magnesium wheels that were nine and eleven-inches wide at front / rear respectively - these further increasing track and improving handling. Ferrari were now able to fit an aluminium undertray that smoothed airflow while like all three series of Daytona Competizione's, the Series II used a development of Colombo's Tipo 251 60° V12. Compression was raised to 10.1:1, output officially going up to a conservative 402bhp at 8300rpm although with the switch from predominantly alloy bodywork to steel (as dictated by the Group 4 regulations that demanded the GTB/4C use the same materials as production Daytona's), performance gains were not as substantial as you might otherwise have imagined. Further bodywork enhancements included extended wheelarch flares to cover those wider Campagnolo wheels but other than a more pumped up appearance, relatively few aesthetic alterations were made. |
