www.QV500.com - Ferrari F40 Part 12: F40 GTE 1995 BPR GT Championship For 1995's BPR GT Championship, F40 GTE's were run under the Ferrari Club Italia banner and got more back-door assistance from the factory. 90001 was first tested at Vallelunga during the winter and development continued here and at Fiorano during the early part of 1995. However, Luciano della Noce's car was not ready in time for the first two rounds of 1995, the Italian industrialist and his co-driver, Anders Olofsson, debuting at Monza. They made an impressive start too, the Swede qualifying on pole and finishing third, a lap down on the Dave Price Racing McLaren F1 and Larbre Competition's Porsche 993 GT2. A second GTE was completed in time for the next round at Jarama, the new car, chassis 82404, being taken over by della Noce and Oloffson, Mancini, Monti and Ayles inheriting 90001. They qualified sixth for the four hour race but retired early on whilst della Noce and Olofsson faired little better as having again taken pole, they only managed to complete 15 laps before gearbox problems forced them out. Round 5 saw the BPR series head to Germany for the Nurburgring 4 Hours, Mancini, Monti and Ayles qualifying in sixth. But although eventually being classified in 23rd, they were 23 laps down on the winning Gulf-backed McLaren. Olofsson had managed to secure the GTE's third consecutive pole for the race but neither he nor della Noce were able to translate this strong performance in qualifying to the race, 82404 retiring after just a couple of laps, overheating cited as the problem. |

The FCI-backed squad missed Round 6 at Donington, four DNF's in five outings convincing them to try and cure some of the predominantly gearbox-based problems that had so far restricted their campaign to just a single podium finish. Subsequently dominating the front row for Montlhery's 1000km race, Round 7 seemingly held much promise, however, both cars were out inside 20 laps, the pole-starting Mancini, Monti and Ayles retiring with a tyre problem, 82404 with electronic gremlins. This unfortunate run wouldn't be coming to an end in Sweden either. |
| Whilst the similarly unreliable F40 LM of RFR Sport won its first race of the year at Anderstorp, Ferrari Club Italia posted another double retirement with both cars out by quarter distance. Olofsson and della Noce went off early in 82404 after qualifying fourth, Mancini, Monti and Ayles starting the race from second before dropping out with more gearbox problems. Suzuka's 1000km race saw the GTE's record their best results of the year, Mancini, della Noce and Olofsson qualifying 82404 in second behind a Kudzu Mazda WSC car and finishing third, Monti, Ayles and Ota starting fifth and finishing a creditable sixth. Olofsson and della Noce made it consecutive podium finishes at Round 10, Silverstone's 4 Hour race, the pair doing well to haul 82404 into third after a dismal qualifying session had seen them start down in 16th. Mancini, Monti and Ayles meanwhile had qualified third and eventually finished seven laps adrift of the winning Mach One McLaren after a troublesome run. The penultimate round of the year was held at Nogaro in France where the GTE's started alongside each other on the third row of the grid, della Noce and Olofsson fifth, Drudi and Ayles sixth in 90001. Only the old car made it to the finish though, placing sixth overall while 82404 was forced into an all too familiar retirement. There was to be no grand finale around the Zhuhai street circuit in China, both GTE's retiring with suspension problems inside 46 laps, this after Olofsson and della Noce had started from pole, Ayles, Drudi and Gounon from third. |
