Although by the late 1960's the number of wealthy clients ordering bespoke Ferrari's was rapidly declining, a handful of special 330 GTC's were constructed. Pininfarina clothed five with Speciale bodywork, Ferrari producing an experimental hot rod for Leopoldo Pirelli while a seventh example was later re-bodied by Zagato. Beginning with the batch of GTC Speciale's, these five cars were all completed with bodywork inspired by the 365 California and epic 365 GT. With their covered headlights, glassy cabins, wraparound rear windshields and extended overhangs, they were a radical departure from the stock GTC. |
| Chassis 10581 meanwhile was an experimental hot rod built for Leopoldo Pirelli, head of the eponymous Italian tyre manufacturer. This special GTC featured a number of non-standard components, most notably a Tipo 245/C engine from the yet-to-be-launched 365. It was also fitted with a unique set of 15-inch Campagnolo five-spoke alloy wheels that would later be used on the Daytona. A standard 330 GTC shell was used and 10581 is typically referred to as either the 330 GTC 4.4 or the 'Pirelli Speciale', not as Coupe Speciale because of its stock bodywork. The last 330 to have bespoke alterations made was chassis 10659, Zagato re-bodying this car for NART impresario Luigi Chinetti. Hardly one of the most appealing designs by the Milanese carrozzeria though, 10659 had its original Pininfarina coachwork replaced by a more modern but markedly less attractive targa-topped shell. |
