Shortly after presenting the Ferrari 348 Elaborazione, Zagato turned their attention to creating a fully operational one-off concept based on the revamped 512 TR. This miniature flurry of activity came after a prolonged sabbatical, the last Zagato-bodied Ferrari having been the rarely seen 3000 Convertible of 1974. Known as FZ93 (Formula Zagato ‘93), the new car was penned by Ercole Spada who had returned to the Milanese coachbuilder in 1992. Based on a standard Swiss market 512 TR (chassis 83935), the FZ93 was a typically uncompromising Zagato design. |
Like the Alfa SZ and Zagato-bodied Aston Martin V8’s that questioned conventional thinking behind automotive beauty, the FZ93 was another controversial study. Many commentators were pleased it never made it into production, however, despite being unashamedly brash with a two-tone colour scheme and flamboyant details, the FZ93 successfully mixed sharp creases with soft curves and looked considerably more futuristic than Pininfarina’s comparatively sober designs. |

Traditional Zagato details like the double bubble roof were incorporated as a nod to the firms illustrious past, other nice details including the side-mounted engine cooling scoops with their vertical blades and matt black OZ Racing five-spoke wheels. Weighing in at 1440kg (over 30kg less than the stock TR), performance was probably a little sharper than normal, the FZ93 making its debut in March 1993 at the Geneva Salon. Only one was built and after doing the rounds at a few shows, this unique Zagato-bodied 512 TR seems to have slipped into obscurity. |
