Given its debut at the Geneva Salon during March 1966, Lamborghini's 400 GT 2+2 featured a number of important differences compared to the two-seater variants it replaced. Mechanically, the 2+2 dropped ZF's five-speed gearbox in favour of a smoother and considerably quieter Lamborghini-designed five-speed transmission (this also having reputedly been seen in a handful of late 400 GT's). There was also an in-house differential to replace what had been a Salisbury item beforehand. The switch to steel bodies was now complete for reasons of manufacturing ease and added durability, just the bootlid and bonnet remaining lightweight alloy items. |
| To increase rear headroom, Touring subtly lowered the rear floorpan, raised the roofline and positioned the body slightly higher on the chassis, raising overall height by just over 2½-inches compared to the outgoing two-seaters. The rear windscreen was significantly reduced in size to maximise boot space and with its increased practicality, the 400 GT 2+2 proved almost twice as popular as earlier models, total production reaching a very respectable 222 units, five of which were right-hand drive. |
