www.QV500.com - Lamborghini Countach Part 7: LP500 'Walter Wolf' |
|
Lamborghini were always capable of producing a bespoke Countach for special customers, some getting custom paint jobs, the odd few hot engines. The most famous three were all manufactured for the same man though, Austrian-born, Canadian-domiciled, F1 team owner, Walter Wolf. Having taken delivery of a Miura SV and had the factory produce him a genuine SV/J, Wolf also ordered the first production LP400. Finished in white and with a unique roof-mounted aerofoil, chassis 0007 was otherwise standard but Wolf would go much further next time. His next three cars were all personally developed by Giampaolo Dallara who returned to Sant Agata specially for each job. Dallara re-fitted each car with the same hot five-litre engine that was loaned to Wolf by the factory. The first car got completed in summer 1975. Chassis 0148 was finished in red and wore a fully adjustable rear wing. It also featured a black front chin spoiler and wheel arch extensions to cover the much wider Bravo style Campagnolo alloy wheels shod with Pirelli's latest-generation P7 tyres. Changes to the interior saw a Personal F1 steering wheel and fire extinguisher fitted. Wolfs subsequent project was a 1976 LP400, chassis 0202. Finished in mid-royal blue and featuring gold pin-striping, there was a Wolf emblem on the tail facia and Canadian flags on each retractable headlight. Once again, Wolf specified an adjustable rear wing although this one could have the camber altered electronically from within the cockpit. Curiously, a public address system was also installed. |
| Wolf was probably too busy winning Grand Prix races in 1977 to require another customised Countach, Jody Scheckter taking victories in Argentina, Monte Carlo and Canada with the Cosworth-powered WR1. In 1978, the first LP400 S (chassis 1001) was acquired by Wolf and finished in the same colours as his racecars, a very dark blue with gold accenting. For this final car there were specially designed Automotive Developments eight piston brakes, a Borg & Beck double disc clutch, a quick steering rack and adjustable brake balance control operational from the cockpit. |
