www.QV500.com - Lamborghini Islero Part 2: The 400 GT Islero S

After 125 Islero's had been built, Lamborghini felt compelled to produce an improved version - the Islero S. With a variety of mechanical, visual and build quality changes, the overall package was considerably enhanced. No more a commercial success than its predecessor though, these cars today rank among Lamborghini's most sought after GT's. Fitted with high compression engines featuring hot Miura S camshafts, output jumped to 350bhp at 7500rpm. Compression was raised to 10.8:1 as on the Miura S, a top speed of 161mph and 0-60 in 6.2 seconds having been possible.

Numerous aesthetic alterations included a horizontal engine cooling vent in front of each door, mild flaring to all four wheelarches, a hood-mounted air-intake and re-shaped front grille cavity housing a pair of supplementary lights. Driver and passenger side windows got fixed triangular planes while inside, a totally redesigned dash replaced the nice-looking but often poorly built earlier item. There were rocker switches in place of pull switches and a glove box instead of a grab handle, there was also an electrically heated rear window. The seats were all new with high backed fronts accompanied by individual rears now seperated by an armrest. Most refreshing was the far higher build quality, but it was all too late to stem off an inevitable demise for much longer. Production of the very fine Islero S was halted in April 1970 after just 100 had been produced.
