There were two particularly interesting concept vehicles built up around Jalpa components, the first of which was developed between 1986 and 87. Generally referred to as the Jalpa Speedster (although never actually given an official factory designation), this one-off prototype was constructed on a spare Jalpa chassis. The nose remained pretty much standard, all the major changes coming at the back where the Speedster mimicked Bertone's Silhouette-based Athon. |

The second concept to have used Jalpa-derived components was a little more bizarre. Lamborghini's Portofino was built by the Turin-based Coggiola works to celebrate Chrysler's announcement of their intended take-over at Sant' Agata. Constructed on a Jalpa chassis stretched by an incredible 26-inches, the Portofino used the same mechanical components and even more surprisingly, the same mid-engined layout. Displayed at 1987's Frankfurt Salon, the Portofino was a bulbous, ugly and overweight machine almost totally at odds with Lamborghini's ethos. The most interesting feature of this fully operational concept was its four Countach-inspired scissors-action doors. |
