|
Lamborghini's suitably improved P400 Miura S was launched at the 1968 Turin Salon after Bob Wallace had conducted a development programme focused primarily around Pirelli's new 70-section Cinturato low-profile tyres. However, cutting edge tyres were just part of the story. Production began in December 1968 with new suspension mounting points (repositioned to negate excessive squat under hard acceleration) and a host of improvements to the engine. Inlet porting was increased from 28 to 30mm, the combustion chambers being reshaped and high lift camshafts fitted along with four triple choke Weber 40 IDL 3L downdraught carburettors. |
| Output was up by 20bhp over the original P400, 370bhp being produced at 7700rpm. Visually, the Miura S was unchanged save for chrome plating that replaced the matt black window frames. There was also new Miura S scripting on the tail facia. Changes to the interior included a redesigned roof-mounted console, electric windows as standard and rocker command switches. A lockable glove box was introduced and the wooden steering wheel fitted to all P400's replaced with a leather-rimmed item. Options were limited to air conditioning and full leather trim. From April 1970 and the 501st Miura made, all P400 S were fitted with ventilated disc brakes. The first example to get them was chassis 4662 although due to Lamborghini's haphazard numbering system, some cars with later chassis numbers were confusingly produced before this upgrade became standard. Built until spring 1971, 140 Miura S were completed before the arrival of the SV, making it the rarest of all production Miura's. |
