Despite Lancia's withdrawal from rallying at the end of 1992, the Integrale was still in demand from customers who appreciated its heritage. Thankfully the buying public were indulged with one final adaption in June 1993 - the Evoluzione II. Freed from the requirement to focus on sporting rules and regulations, Lancia were able to make some important changes that further enhanced the driving experience. Most importantly there was (at long last) a catalysed version of the 16-valve engine. It featured a three-way catalyst with Lambda probe, knock sensors fitted to the block, a double ignition coil and revised ignition. |
Other improvements included Magnetti Marelli IAW engine management with double the previous memory capacity and a smaller Garrett T3 turbocharger that reduced lag and gave better responsiveness at high revs. Output rose from 210 to 215bhp at an identical 5750rpm. That Evo II's were quoted as having the same performance figures as before (137mph top speed and 0-62 in 5.7 seconds) ignored the fact this was the most driveable Integrale ever built and definitely the quickest point to point. No structural changes were necessary although a couple of minor cosmetic tweaks did set the Evo II apart. The original 15-inch wheels were replaced with 16-inch rims of a similar style, the body-coloured roof moulding that ran down the A-pillar now being painted body colour. Under the bonnet, all Evo II's came with a cylinder head finished in red whilst inside there was a Momo Corse steering wheel. Several items that had previously been cost-options were now thrown in as standard, most notably ABS braking, high-backed Recaro front seats, a body coloured rear spoiler and air-conditioning. Leather trim remained a cost option along with a sunroof. All this extra equipment inevitably pushed the weight up a little (by 40kg to 1340kg), but this did nothing to blunt the Evo II's scintilating driving characteristics. The last Integrale left the Maggiora factory in November 1994 by which time Evo II production had reached 4223 units. Once again, all were left-hand drive. |
