Even fits a single seater with room to spare

New onto the market, this club specification DVR is a balance of design, functionality, recording resolution and value for money.

Measuring just 80x 52x 22mm and weighing only 76 grams we claim this truly is “the world's smallest solid state DVR”, comes complete with its own LCD screen so you can play back your recorded footage instantly. Alternatively you can play back via a TV or PC using Windows media player.

2. Chase PDR100 £469

This US manufactured unit really is a great value for money DVR. If I'm honest this broadcast quality 720x 576 MPEG-2 recorder which records on to CF card should cost 4 times the price considering its functionality and specification.

Amazingly this rugged DVR is fully configurable which means you can adjust both the video and audio settings to match your requirements across a broad range. All selected settings and the units current operating status is shown on its neat built in data screen. The record can also be connected to external microphone which makes it ideal for rallying.

You can activate record via a single trigger switch on the unit or it can be connected to a standard wired Lanc remote which you can position on your dashboard. The unit has an intelligent power supply feature and can be powered by internal AA batteries and/or connected to an external 12v power source. Playback of your recorded footage is instant and can be viewed by connecting the DVR to a TV or monitor or inserting the CF card into a PC.

Outstanding value for money.

3. Stack professional motorsport DVR, £3595

For high quality video recordings on the move, the miniature Solid-State Digital Video Recorder (DVR) from Stack provides the optimum solution and is specifically designed for use in harsh environments. The DVR employs broadcast standard MPEG-2 video compression to record high quality 720x 576 real-time video and audio direct to a PC flash card. This card can be removed with ease and played on a PC or laptop using a standard media player application.

The Stack DVR is housed inside a waterproof and completely sealed enclosure to IP67 standard, this specifically designed and manufactured housing can protect the unit in harsh and extreme environments.

A data overlay feature is also provided so that date and time may be stamped onto the recorded video. Recordings can be archived direct to DVD for playback on either a PC or a DVD player.

The Stack DVR is fully compatible with all Goldstar Race/Rallycam systems and can be used as a stand-alone recorder or conjunction with the range of Stack data and synchronised data logging products. Record on/off is activated by a small illuminated switch or when using Stack data logging products it can be triggered by engine RPM.

4. Sony Mini DV Handycam Circa £320

For many years we have used Sony mini DV Handycam's as our principle recording device solution. They have, and continue to be, an excellent recorder producing high quality results. Disappointingly Sony are manufacturing fewer and fewer models with the required A/V and Lanc inputs, so the days of using a Handycam are now numbered. Plus, there is also a natural progression away from “the old technology” to the new digital card recording formats.

We normally have a few brand new and sometimes a few almost new Sony's in stock, give us a call to check availability and price. The up side of the Sony Handycam is

•  It's compact and it works, giving excellent 720 x 576 quality results on a digital tape
•  It's affordable
•  Providing it has a Lanc connection it can be activated from the driving seat via a neat remote control switch (see Accessories)
•  You can use it to film Grandma at Christmas
