Between 1964 and 69, Porsche built a variety of competition cars with 2-litre engines. They would occasionally compete with specially developed examples themselves, but the majority of cars were made for customers. Whilst the 1970's saw 911 racing cars become almost unrecognisable from their road-going counterparts, these early years were spent campaigning machines closely derived from what you could find in any Porsche showroom. The first three 911's officially prepared for competition were works entries that would contest the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally. |
| The cars, effectively prototypes of the forthcoming 911 S, featured uprated brakes, Boge front damper struts and larger capacity fuel tanks. The Typ 901/02 engines developed over 160bhp at 6600rpm and featured polished ports, platinum spark plugs, hot camshafts and bigger Weber carburettors. There were also higher compression ratios, lightened flywheels and competition exhausts. A ZF limited slip differential was installed along with a lower final drive ratio and competition clutch. Externally, the 1965 Monte Carlo entries received extra driving lights for the night-time stages but otherwise remained remarkably standard in appearance, even down to riding stock wheels and tyres. Overall weight was cut by 50kg. Three works examples were produced by the factory and saw use throughout 1965, the chassis numbers of which were 303075, 303076 and 303077. Replicas were then built for customers. Throughout 1966 and '67, Porsche then began offering buyers a slightly more powerful S Rally. |

| Although outwardly pretty much identical to previous editions, it featured a Typ 901/30 engine developing in its most basic form, 170bhp at 7300rpm. The Rally Kit included thicker anti-roll bars, new carbs, ignition and exhausts, underbody shields and a limited slip differential. Weight remained unchanged at 1030kg. Customers could further enhance their cars by opting for the 175bhp Rally Kit II that featured bigger carbs with a smaller air cleaner, reconfigured carbrettor jets and venturis, an even louder exhaust system and a supplementary oil gap tank. Three more works cars were constructed by the factory, the chassis numbers of which were 306655 S, 306656 S and 306657 S, these cars producing 180bhp. Then, for 1968 the FIA re-classified the 911 T into the same category as the 911 S. Considering the T road car weighed 52kg less than the S and that for competition it could legally be equipped with a more powerful engine, the S Rally was discontinued in favour of the new T/R. |
