Porsche’s involvement racing works 935’s was drastically reduced in 1978. Although a massive development programme had been undertaken to produce the infamous ‘Moby Dick’, the firm found they were on a hiding to nothing with such an advanced machine. Porsche’s dominance of the Group 5 World Championship meant that no other works team even bothered to turn up that year and with the privateer 935’s normally capable of outpacing the handful of BMW 320i’s, there was little point in beating your best customers by seven laps, as they did at the Silverstone 6 Hours. |
Sensibly, Porsche minimised the ‘Moby Dick’s appearances to a pair of World Championship events, the Le Mans 24 Hours and a German National event at the Norisring. 15 Customer 935’s were built for 1978, these having effectively been a second series of the 13 privateer cars made for 1977, albeit with a number of key improvements. Chief among these was an enlarged twin turbocharged engine designated Typ 930/78. Closely derived from the unit used in 1977 by the works team, it was bored out by a further 2.2mm taking overall displacement from 2856 to 2994cc. Two KKK K-27 turbos were installed (boost normally being set at 1.45bar) and there were also the latest water-to-air intercoolers, output rising from 630 to 675bhp at 8000rpm. Aesthetically the 1978 customer cars were equipped with ground effect-style running boards and removable rear fenders. In addition to the batch of 15 935 ’78’s built for privateers, there was also one single turbo car and a rolling chassis for Dick Barbour. Several older cars were also enhanced with these latest generation upgrades and in 1978, 935’s completely dominated the international racing scene, wining all eight World Championship events, 12 out of 14 races in IMSA and countless more national events around the globe. |
