![]() |
Ever since the mid seventies, a turbocharged 911 Coupe had been offered alongside Porsche's normally aspirated variants. The 964 Turbo was introduced in March 1990 at the Geneva Salon and went into production that September for the 1991 model year. Equipped with larger cross-perforated brake discs, wider track and thicker and stiffer anti-roll bars, it was the engine, however, that really stood this derivative out from other 964's. Designated Typ M30/69, capacity was 3299cc thanks to a bore and stroke of 97 x 74.4mm respectively, these dimensions being identical to every 911 Turbo since August 1977. |
Derived from the Typ 930/66 engines used in 911 Turbo's since 1982, output was up from 300 to 320bhp, this having come via a new resonant air intake and exhaust system, re-mapped Bosch Motronic engine management and a 50% bigger intercooler. There was also a larger KKK turbocharger installed although this was actually set 0.1 bar lower than before at 0.7. Compression remained 7.0:1. The Typ M30/69 motor was mounted on hydro-bushings to reduce vibration, cabin noise having been reduced thanks to a dual mass flywheel. Performance was quite outstanding, the 911 Turbo shaming expensive and impractical exotica with its 169mph top speed and 0-60 time of five seconds dead. Outside, flared wheelarches housed the wider rubber and Cup Design alloys, a fixed whale tail rear spoiler lending an even more aggressive stance. Teardrop exterior mirros were fitted as standard. Cabin fixtures and fiitings were imported directly from the Carrera 2 and 4, production continuing without any major developments being introduced until a new 3.6-litre version was announed two years later. |

Launched in October 1992, the new 3.6-litre engine was based on the Typ M64/01 motors used in the Carrera 2 and 4. By spring of 1993, the 3.3 had been discontinued after 4107 were completed, the 3.6 taking over thereafter. Thanks to the extra 301cc, turbo pressure cranked up to 0.85 bar and high lift camshafts, output jumped to 360bhp at 5500rpm. Compression went unchanged at 7.5:1, but top speed rose to 175mph whilst 0-60 took just 4.8 seconds. This latest version was identifiable by new 18-inch three-piece Speedline wheels, red heat-resistant brake calipers and 3.6 Turbo scripting on the engine cover. |
